How to Cancel Recurring Subscriptions on Your Bank Statement
Recurring charges are easy to miss and easy to keep paying. This guide walks you through finding subscription charges on your statements, identifying the service behind them, cancelling them with the merchant, and confirming the payment has stopped.
CancelMonthly is an independent informational resource. We are not a cancellation service, we do not access your accounts, and nothing here is financial or legal advice.

Identify first
How to spot recurring charges
The first step is noticing the charge at all. Recurring payments are often small, appear monthly, and sit among many other transactions, which is exactly why they go unreviewed.
Pull up your most recent bank or card statement and look for entries that repeat. Helpful patterns to look for:
- The same descriptor appearing once a month or once a year.
- Round or familiar amounts that match a subscription price.
- Words in the descriptor such as “SUBSCRIPTION”, “MEMBERSHIP”, “RECURRING” or a plan name.
- Charges that post a day or two after a fixed date each cycle.
Comparing two consecutive statements side by side is the most reliable way to separate genuinely recurring charges from one-off purchases.
Step by step
The cancellation steps
- Find the recurring charge on your statementOpen your bank or card statement and look for entries that repeat at regular intervals — often monthly or annually. Note the exact descriptor text, the amount and the date it posts.
- Identify the service behind the descriptorStatement descriptions are often abbreviated. Search the descriptor online, check your email receipts for matching amounts, or look through your phone's active subscriptions to match the charge to a service.
- Cancel through the merchant firstSign in to the service's account settings, app store or billing portal and use the cancel option. For written-notice subscriptions such as gyms, follow the procedure stated in your contract and keep a copy.
- Get confirmation in writingAsk for an email or written confirmation of the cancellation, including the effective date. If none is offered automatically, take a screenshot showing the cancelled status and save the date you cancelled.
- Monitor your next statementAfter the next billing date, check the statement again to confirm no further charge appears. A charge that continues after the agreed cancellation date is grounds for a dispute with your bank.
- Dispute continuing charges with your bankIf a merchant keeps charging after you cancelled, contact your bank or card issuer, explain the situation, provide your cancellation proof, and request a chargeback and a stop on future payments.
Where repeats hide
Common types of recurring charges
- Streaming video, music and audiobooks
- Software, apps and cloud storage
- News, magazines and digital publications
- Gym, fitness and wellness memberships
- Security and identity-monitoring services
- Box deliveries and product refill plans
- Free trials that converted to paid plans
- Third-party subscriptions billed via app stores
Descriptors and billing brands change over time. Treat this list as a starting point rather than an exhaustive register, and confirm each charge against your own records.
Checklist
Before you cancel
- Write down the exact descriptor as it appears on your statement.
- Confirm the amount, currency and billing cycle of the charge.
- Check the next renewal date before you cancel.
- Cancel inside any notice period stated in your contract.
- Note which card or account the charge is being taken from.
- Keep the cancellation confirmation email or screenshot.
- Ask whether a prorated refund is available.
- Review the following month's statement to confirm it stopped.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Cancel with the merchant first. Your bank can block a payment, but the cleanest result is to end the subscription at its source so no further charge is attempted. Contact your bank if the merchant continues to charge after you have cancelled.

Featured guides
Each guide is a short, self-contained read. Select a title to expand the key points.
- Scan every line in chronological order, not just the largest amounts.
- Match each charge to a service you recognise and use.
- Flag any entry where the descriptor does not immediately mean something to you.
- Compare this month's statement with last month's to spot new recurring entries.
- Check foreign-currency lines separately, since small conversions can hide repeats.

Who we are
About CancelMonthly

CancelMonthly is an independent informational publication about finding and cancelling recurring subscription charges that appear on bank and card statements. It exists because small, repeating payments are easy to overlook and quietly add up over time.
Our editorial approach is deliberately plain. We describe what to look for on a statement, how to identify the service behind a charge, and the steps to cancel it. We do not rank services, promote specific products, or publish sponsored placements dressed up as advice.
What we publish
- Step-by-step guidance for reading statements and spotting recurring charges.
- Checklists of what to confirm before and after cancelling a subscription.
- Explanations of card descriptors, billing cycles and chargebacks.
- Practical guidance on avoiding trial-to-paid conversions.
What we are not
CancelMonthly is not a cancellation service, a payment processor, a bank, or a financial adviser. We do not access your accounts, contact merchants on your behalf, or cancel subscriptions for you. Nothing on this site should be read as legal, financial or tax advice; for those matters, consult a qualified professional or your bank.
How our material is prepared
Guides are written and reviewed in-house, then revised when the practices they describe change. Where a topic depends on local law or your card issuer's policy, we say so rather than generalise. If you believe a guide is inaccurate or out of date, we welcome corrections through the contact details below.
